Are you planning to move to a new city in India in the next few months? For many of you, this might be the first time you’re moving out of the comfort of your home and the city you grew up in. We can imagine how exciting and terrifying it must be.
But guess what? India has more than 41 million inter-state migrants! They have managed to move to different cities and settle down. You’ll be able to do it too.
Moreover, we’re here to list out the five things you should keep in mind to have a safe and happy life in the new city. This list should give you a head start.
Check them out.
1. You’ll get a house. You need to make it a home
If you’re renting a house, be ready to not feel at home during the initial days. If you’re lucky, the house owner will care enough to have everything up and running before you move in. But we’d suggest you be ready for all kinds of surprises including non-functional taps and unreliable water supply. To avoid them, be in touch with the house owner and ensure he runs a check before you move in.
If you are moving in with someone, don’t forget to create a list of appliances both of you would require. Even if you don’t have everything in place, you can ensure that you get clean drinking water and food if you have a water purifier and a gas stove. That would be a good start.
2. Learn to cook at home to save money and health
If you’re someone who has no clue about cooking, this might be a good time to get started with the basics. You will have to make that first cup of chai at some point!
While you can order food online, it’s not a healthy option. If you learn the basics of cooking, you can manage to have home-cooked food every day (except when you want to get a pizza!). If you have a flatmate, you can even take turns.
All said and done, just make sure you stock up the ingredients and use purified water while cooking so that you don’t fall sick.
3. Be ready to build social and professional connections
Networking is a very important factor. Especially if you are moving to a new city to build your career. If you’re joining a new company in the city, find your future colleagues on LinkedIn. This will help you know them better and not be a stranger.
You need a social life too. So, this might be a good time to hit up that college friend of yours who is in the city.
4. Create a bucket list
You chose the particular city for a reason. It might be the fact that you landed your dream job, marriage, or something else. Anyhow, now you need to make the most of it. So, create a bucket list.
Jot down everything you want to do in the new city and the places you want to visit. Make sure that you have new experiences. Consider this an opportunity to explore.
5. Be open to culture, people, and language
If you’re moving out of your home for the first time, this is going to be a rollercoaster ride. But you are in it to have a good time, aren’t you? So, you should be ready to learn.
Every place has its own culture, people, and language. Be open to learning new things from the places you visit and the people you meet. You might even have to pick up a new language! You don’t have to speak like a native of the place. People will be happy to help if they know you’re trying to learn. So, just be open to everything that comes your way when you move to a new city.
Now that you know the five things you need to keep in mind before you move to a new city, you can start acting on them. They will come in handy. Here’s one last thing — build a routine before you move. Rise early, exercise daily, drink plenty of water and go to bed on time. If you already have a routine, continue to follow it. If not, you can start now so that you can easily take care of yourself when you move.
